6.3 Iran quake: Minor tremors in Gulf

A series of minor tremors are being reported in different parts of the Gulf after a sparsely populated mountainous province near Iran’s border with Iraq was jolted by a strong, magnitude 6.3 earthquake this morning.

An Earthquake map on the website of the National Centre for Meteorology & Seismology (NCMS) shows at least 5 tremors, with the strongest being a 3.3 ML (local magnitude) scale tremor in the Arabian Gulf, 59km northwest of the Abu Musa island.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter Scale struck western Iran on Monday, near the provincial capital of Dezful, about 480km from Tehran, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Iran quake, at a depth of 10km, hit at 6.32am UAE time. There have been no reports of casualties.

On Sunday, an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale also hit an area near the town of Damavand in Iran’s Northern province of Mazandaran.

According to a report by the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the earthquake hit Larijan area at 3.55am.

In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that caused extensive damage to the historic southeastern city of Bam.

There were no reports of fatalities but a local official said there were injuries and that the temblor had caused damage.

The TV said the quake hit the town of Murmuri, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) southwest of the capital, Tehran, at 7:02 local time (0232 GMT).
