Six UAE residents were killed in two accidents on the Muscat-Salalah Highway in Oman last Friday.

According to a report in local daily Khaleej Times, quoting the Royal Oman Police there were two fatal accidents.

“We have reports of two fatal accidents on the highway. Both vehicles involved were UAE-registered,” Haitham Al Rahbi, a senior official at the Royal Oman Police, from Muscat said.

In the first accident, a Bangladeshi family of four, including the parents and two children, was killed. The vehicle was driven by a woman, he added.

“We can confirm the accident, but at this stage we don’t have the full details.”

The second accident according to the officer, happened at 7pm on Friday on the Wilayat Haima highway near Makashen.

“In the accident, two people, Mohammed Hassan Al Houssani and Ismail Al Hammadi, were killed. Zahahir Hussein Al Hammadi who was with them was injured and is in a critical condition at Nizwa Hospital. All were UAE nationals,” Al Rahbi said.

“The Bangladeshi family was driving a Lexus station wagon while the Emiratis were in a Nissan Patrol which over-turned near Makashen,” he said.

The two families were heading for the annual Salalah Tourism Festival which begins in the middle of July and continues till end August. During this time, Salalah in Wilayat Al Dhofar and its remote areas are blanketed with medium clouds.

Most of the Al Dhofar area witnesses rain which is unique in the entire Middle East region.

Al Rahbi further advised motorists to be cautious while driving on the highway that passes through a stretch of the Empty Quarter or Rub-e-Khali in Arabia.

“It is crucial that motorists are well equipped when they make the journey. Drivers should not speed on the highway and should break their journey and rest to avoid fatigue,” he advised.
