7-day-old baby sold for Dh1,500

Colombo - A team of police officers of the Modera police have arrested a father and a mother, who sold their 7-day old baby for SLR50,000 (Dh1,500 approx).

Four others have also been arrested for helping them, ‘Lankadeepa’ reported. The four other suspects include two women, who brokered the deal and a couple who bought the child.

The baby is being looked after by the police. According to the case, the baby was born at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama on August 24.

As arranged earlier, a broker came to the hospital on August 29 and took the baby after paying Rs50,000 and discharging the mother from hospital.

The hospital tipped-off the police who first arrested the parents and later, the broker, who led the police to all involved in the crime. Further investigations revealed the parents wanted the money to buy a house.

Doctor sentenced to death for rape, murder    

A doctor has been sentenced to death for rape and murder. Dr IS Balage was found guilty of raping a woman and pushing her off the sixth floor of the hospital to her death, local media reported.

The victim was Chamila Dissanayake, 23, a resident of Moneragala, who had been working in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone (FTZ) and the convict worked at the Negombo General Hospital, where the incident occurred on November 12, 2007.

The victim had undergone a surgery to remove a small growth on her breast at the hospital.

The verdict was announced by the Negombo High Court.
