Abu Dhabi has warned its taxi drivers against smoking, eating or sleeping in their cars or they will face heavy fines of up to Dh1,000.

TransAD, which groups six major taxi operators in the capital, urged the public to report such offences by its drivers when they use the cabs.

“Taxi drivers found to be eating, smoking or sleeping in their cars will be fined Dh500…in case the offence is repeated, they will be fined Dh1,000,” the company said in a statement carried by local newspapers.

TransAD, which was created nearly five years ago, said customers and other members of the public can call free on 60005355353 to report such offences.

TransAD is operating more than 8,000 silver taxi cabs in Abu Dhabi city under the supervision of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport.
