A jobless man killed a policeman and injured two others causing one of them permanent disability while under the influence of drugs, the Court of First Instance heard Sunday.
The 50-year-old Emirati hit a policeman when he was trying to escape anti-narcotics police and intentionally rammed his car into the patrol vehicle, causing it to overturn and kill a policeman, another policeman testified.
The policeman said he was asked to arrest the defendant, an alleged drug peddler, after police were tipped off he was carrying narcotics in his car.
A trap was set for the defendant on Emirates Road, as he was returning from Abu Dhabi on December 27, 2010 at 9pm.
When the police attempted to stop him, he fled, running over one of the policemen on the way and causing him severe injuries.
The witness, who was driving the patrol car, told prosecutors that when the defendant was surrounded by two patrols cars on the road, he drove into one of the cars which caused it to overturn.
The policeman who was run over also testified that a trap was set for the defendant near Muhaisnah Bridge on Emirates Road, and he was spotted around 11pm.
When police signaled to him to pull over he stopped, but as soon as a patrol car approached he stepped on the pedal and ran over the witness on the way, driving over his left leg while escaping.
The defendant was chased by two patrols while the witness was taken to hospital.
After hitting the police car, the defendant managed to escape and reach his home in Ajman, where he was arrested.
He admitted to prosecutors that he had taken psychotropic substances and told police that another man was providing him with drugs. The dealer was arrested in Abu Dhabi.
A traffic expert told prosecutors that when he was informed about the crash, he found the police patrol on the right of the road. The car had hit the metal barrier on the side of the road and torn through it before landing 30 metres away.
The defendant denied the charges in court and the case was adjourned until August 10.
