Beach weekend: 1 dead, scores rescued

Rough sea weather claimed one life over the weekend, though media reports stated that several near-escapes were recorded by lifeguards at beaches across the UAE.
 
An Indian expatriate drowned off the beach in Ras Al Khaimah.

The 27-year-old was swimming in the sea behind Al Ittihad University when strong winds and high waves swept him away, according to the Khaleej Times.
 
The man was at the beach along with members of his family, including his mother and brother, for a picnic.A search operation was conducted, but rescuers failed to find the victim’s body due to the strong winds and rough sea conditions.The victim’s body was eventually recovered at around 5pm.According to media reports, scores of people were rescued from various other beaches over the weekend, including the Jumeirah Beach Residence open beach and Umm Suqeim in Dubai.
