Chicken beauties: Dh7,400 a bird at Saudi auction

A chicken was sold for SR7,500 (Dh7,400) at an auction that was staged at a rare poultry pageantry in Saudi Arabia this week, according to the organisers.

The contest was held at a farm near the capital Riyadh and is believed to be the first beauty competition involving chicken to be held in the oil-rich Gulf.

Saudi farmer Mutaab Al Othman organised the contest at his farm on Friday and newspapers in the Gulf Kingdom said scores of beautiful chicken took part in the event, which attracted more than 500 farmers and businessmen from the region.

“The level of participation in the event was beyond expectation. It included a beauty contest and an auction, during which a chicken was sold for SR7,500,” Al Othman said, quoted by the Saudi Arabic language daily Sabq.

“Some of the participants kept their chicken out of the auction as they refused to sell them, but they were involved in the beauty contest.”

He did not mention which chicken won the contest and how it was picked by a panel formed at the farm on the same day.

Saudi Arabia, the largest Gulf country, has already hosted beauty contests involving horses, camels, goats and falcons but it was the first time chicken were involved.
