A 19-year-old Emirati college student died when she was struck by lightning while awaiting the bus at the collage park to take her back home at the end of classes on Wednesday, a newspaper reported on Thursday.
Seven other girls from the college of technology were injured in a stampede after students pushed into the college for cover after seeing their classmate collapse. “All of them were taken to hospital but Sabiha was already dead…her colleagues were treated of various injuries as a result of the stampede,” the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm said.
The paper quoted Colonel Humaid al Yamahi as saying Sabiha died of a cardiac arrest as a result of the thunderbolt. But he denied reports on Facebook that lightning resulted in the collapse of parts of the college. The paper said Fujeirah’s crown prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi visited the injured girls at the accident unit in Fujeirah hospital on Wednesday and instructed staff members to take care of them.
