Delhi building collapse: 1 dead

A fire official says a four-story building has collapsed in the Indian capital while it was being demolished, killing at least one worker and injuring 14 others.

The official, S.L. Sharma, says the occupants vacated the building recently as it developed cracks. The building came crashing down early Saturday.

Building collapses are common in India because builders often use substandard materials and multistory structures are often built without adequate supervision, and the massive demand for housing around India's cities and pervasive corruption often result in builders adding unauthorised floors or putting up illegal buildings.

In April, 74 people were killed when an eight-story building being constructed illegally in Thane caved in. It was the country's worst building collapse in decades.
