Dogs guarding industrial facilities near Ras Al Khaimah attacked a remote tiny Sharjah town and killed 47 sheep under the cover of night, prompting official warnings to companies to control their dogs, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

A large number of guard dogs not leashed by their owners dug under the fence of the industrial complex in Suhaila town south of RAK and attacked the nearby livestock barns owned by some Emirati residents.

The dogs killed 47 sheep by biting them to death and seriously wounded 19 others, Dubai-based Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily said.“We have received a complaint from citizens about the attack over the past few days,” said Ahmed al Hammadi, director of RAK public works and services department.

“We have sent a vet team to that area to examine the sheep…we found that they died after they were bitten by dogs guarding industrial installations in Suhaila.”

He said owners of the dogs have been warned to control their animals and put leashes on them to end such attacks, adding that all dogs found outside the industrial complex would be immediately impounded. The paper said the attacked sheep belonged to a number of Emiratis and that they were attacked inside their barns.

It quoted livestock owners as saying the sheep died of their wounds and that other sheep injured in the attack could also die.
