Earthquake hits Western Indonesia

An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted Aceh province in western Indonesia on Tuesday, but there was no reported potential for a tsunami.

According to the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, the quake struck the province at the northern tip of Sumatra Island with the epicentre at 353 km northwest of Sabang town and at a depth of 10 km under sea bed.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire".
