Egyptian army kills 40 militants in North Sinai

Security forces in North Sinai have successfully foiled a terrorist assault on some checkpoints south of Rafah, killing 40 militants, the army said in a statement.

"Law enforcement forces in northern Sinai succeeded in thwarting a terrorist attack on some checkpoints south of Rafah," the statement said.

The Egyptian military said on Friday that 26 army personnel were killed or injured by car bombs that targeted a security checkpoint in North Sinai, and that the army had killed 40 militants in the attacks, according to Ahram Online.

It said security forces had destroyed six of their vehicles following the attack.
