About 1189 traffic violations were recorded in Dubai during the New Year celebrations.

About 681 offences were reported in Deira and 508 in Bur Dubai. Eight cars - 5 in Deira and 3 in Bur Dubai - were impounded.

Police patrol on roads was unprecedented this year. Officials studied in detail traffic issues at prime areas where revellers were expected to flock to.

New Year's eve saw thousands of people converge on Sheikh Zayed Road, and Boulevard Street around the Burj Khalifa to enjoy the fireworks.

Similarly, Muraqqabat and Mamzar Corniche Road were teeming with revellers.

The traffic situation was monitored by a team headed by Major General Khamis Mattar, Commander-in-Chief, Dubai Police and Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazroui, Deputy Director of Dubai Traffic Department.

Colonel Saif Al Mazrouei said all roads - including internal roads and bylanes - were closely monitored.

Several officials were on duty and patrols were made stringent, he added. Vehicles that were overcrowded were stopped.

Pedestrians were also strictly controlled and were warned if caught crossing from undesignated areas. "This to a large extend avoided several mishaps," he said.
