17 schools in Abu Dhabi face closure

Abu Dhabi’s education authorities have warned 17 private schools they could be shut down if they fail to meet official requirements and improve their performance, an education official was reported on Sunday as saying.

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), which oversees schools in the emirate, found that 17 of the 183 private schools operating in Abu Dhabi have failed to meet basic educational conditions and their performance has remained unsatisfactory, said Hamad Al Dahiri, Director of the Private Schools sector at Adec.

“These schools have been given a last chance to redress their position and improve performance after they have failed to meet requirements over the past six years,” Dahiri told the Dubai-based Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm'.

“We have found that those 17 schools have failed to achieve even the minimum level of the council’s criteria.

"In case they fail again to meet conditions, we will take measures against them and these may include terminating the school’s director and its closure.”
