2-hour car thief jailed 3 months, to be deported

An Asian young man who stole a car for just two hours to have a ride with friends had apparently thought he would pay such a heavy price.  Found guilty of theft, he was sentenced to three months in prison and ordered deported from the UAE.

The unnamed man, who was seen on camera taking the car, told an Abu Dhabi court he just wanted to have a ride with two friends and return the car to its owner.

A court of first instance was even tougher as it sentenced him to one year in jail and ordered his deportation after serving his prison term. It also sentenced the other two to three months in prison and ordered their deportation.

A court of appeals reduced the sentenced against the main culprit to three months in jail and maintained the deportation order. It also acquitted the two other defendants.
