A significant percentage of motorists in Sharjah who violate traffic rules are caught for speeding, according to a top police official, and that such reckless drivers caught driving at speeds of up to 200km/h or more have been summoned by Sharjah Police to face legal action.

Earlier, all such violators needed to simply clear up their traffic fines while renewing their vehicle registration.

Colonel Shawaf Abdul Rahman, Director of Traffic and Patrols, Sharjah Police, said more than 40 per cent of those spotted by speed cameras exceed 200 kmph.

He suggested legal action be taken against speedsters.

Col Rahman said motorists caught exceeding 60kmph will be slapped with a fine of Dh1,000 and will earn 12 black points for the offence. They will also have their vehicles confiscated for a month, or they could pay an additional Dh3,000 fine in lieu of the confiscation.

He said vehicles of motorists caught doing over 200kmph will be confiscated for a month without the option of paying a fine in lieu of the confiscation. They will also incur 12 black points and a fine of Dh1,000.

Col Rahman said police is increasing the number of radars on roads to catch speedsters.

He urged motorists to respect traffic rules in order to ensure safety of road users.
