Two sailors from the ship that sank off Ajman coast while on its way to Iran on December 23 were successfully rescued by Dubai Police.
Lt Col Abdullah Al Mazioud, Director, Ports Police Station, Dubai, said it is commendable of the sailors to have the presence of mind to keep their passports safe through their ordeal.
The men were at sea for about three days.
Dubai Police said they could have rescued more sailors had they received the alert on time.
The department attempted to contact the sailors upon receiving a missing alert by the owner of the ship.
The police rescued two sailors and retrieved one body. Three others are still missing.
The official said the last anyone heard from the sailors was the ship’s owner. The sailors had contacted the him to inform that they wanted to return to Ajman after crossing more than 10 nautical miles. “But they soon lost control.”
Interestingly, the sailors had kept their passports safe even as they were at sea for almost three days, added Lt Col Mazioud.
The sailors were on their way to bring diesel.
