UAE authorities watching local markets to prevent manipulation fined two companies Dh150,000 for making fake offers after receiving complaints from consumers through a newly-introduced hot line.

One company in Dubai trading in a famous brand for women clothes and accessories was fined Dh50,000 by the Ministry of Economy after it was reported to be involved in fake sales offers.

A customer told the consumer protection section at the Ministry that he bought a women’s bag for Dh130 from one of the company’s outlets but found that it was offered later for Dh189 within a promotion drive.
He said the company said it was offering the bag below its original price of Dh269.

“The Ministry of Economy checked the offers made by the company and found that it was not genuine…..Ministry inspectors decided that the company was making a fake offer to mislead customers,” Emirat Alyoum daily said, adding that the unnamed firm was ordered to pay Dh50,000 fine.

Another firm in Ras Al Khaimah trading in furniture was fined Dh100,000 for manipulating prices in a bid to make fake offers and increase its profits.

“These companies were penalized under a consumer protection law which bans any shop or firm from making offers that will mislead customers and harm the interests of consumers,” the paper said, quoting head of the consumer protection section, Hashem Al Nuaimi.
