Car accidents killed 263 people in Abu Dhabi in the first seven months of 2011 while 107 others were seriously injured, police statistics showed.
The death toll this year was nearly 10 per cent lower than in the same period of 2010, when 291 people were killed and 137 injured.
The number of road mishaps also declined to 1,829 in the first seven months of 2011 from 1,964 in the same period of last year.
“There has been a drop in accidents and casualties in the emirate over the past period as a result of intensified police patrols and awareness campaigns,” Brigadier Hassan Al Harthi, director of the Abu Dhabi police traffic department, told the Dubai-based 'Al Bayan' newspaper.
