3 steps to getting a salary hike... without asking

It sounds a bit dreamy but you can get a pay hike without even asking for one. The condition is that you should be a very visibly deserving employee to fall into this category. It’s not easy, but there are certain things you should strive for to see your boss handing you an increment letter, without you having to solicit one.

#1 Be your best and get revenues

No matter what role you play in your office, always strive to do your best. Do what you’re supposed to, plus everything listed, and then more than that.

Doing extraordinary work will earn you recognition and rewards at the same time and seal your place in the company for a long time.

For example, if you are in sales and manage to quickly get new contracts for your company even as the rest of the team struggles, you will definitely become the star of the team and ultimately the most deserving person there.

In whatever department you may be, you have to make the company grow. It’s simple logic – the more money your employer makes, the greater will be your chances of getting an increment, and sometimes without even asking for one.

On the other hand, if the company you work for isn’t able to bring in new business, don’t expect a lot of growth in your profile or pay package.

#2 Show a positive attitude, adapt and learn

Employees with a positive attitude are fun to work with and bosses appreciate this trait and reward them as and when possible.

Positive attitude is sure to rub off on co-workers and generally helps maintain a good atmosphere at the workplace. And as far as a manger is concerned, he will always prefer a person who wants to work and comes into the office with an air of energy and enthusiasm.

At the same time, be ready to change and adapt. Everybody likes a perfect timetable, but this may not always be the case.

There are going to be days when you will be given tasks that may not necessarily be your work. But you should adapt and be able to deliver. It is the ability to adapt in a positive manner that can really help employees progress within the organisation.

#3 Try to be indispensable

Nobody is indispensable but try to become a critically important cog in the wheel on whom the team always relies. Better still, see that the boss knows that work suffers in you absence.

Does your boss look at you for difficult tasks or for assignments that have strict deadlines? Does he consult you and ask you for your opinion? Does he confide in you?

If you have reached this stage, there are good chances that you are his reliable one. And, this works for you. If you make yourself irreplaceable or even something close to that, you will get pretty much what you want.

These three traits can help you get a raise without asking for it but it isn’t necessarily guaranteed.

Sometime, things may be out of control of your immediate boss, but rest assured you will be first one on his mind when a promotion becomes available in the company, profits return and budgets are restored. Till then, the key is to stay patient and perform even better to increase your chances of receiving a raise.
