Road accidents killed 33 people in Dubai in the first quarter of 2011 and 16 of them caused their own death, police records showed on Monday.
The death toll was far lower in the first quarter of 2010, when 56 people died as a result of road mishaps in the emirate, said Salah Al Falasi, public prosecutor at the Dubai traffic police department.
"We found that 16 of the deaths in the first quarter of this year were caused by the victims themselves" he told Emirat Alyoum newspaper.
"The decline in the death toll is a very good indicator as it shows our awareness campaigns are working."
