A total of 5,205 vehicles were impounded during the past eight months for exceeding speed of 200 kmph on the internal and external roads of Abu Dhabi, said Brigadier Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Police.

According to a report in the Al Khaleej Arabic daily newspaper, Al Harthi said there would be no complacency in applying traffic laws on reckless motorists.

He pointed out that drivers of impounded vehicles were referred to the public prosecutor to take legal action against them.

Al Harthi stressed the need to adhere to the prescribed speed limits shown on signage on various roads. These speed limits were set after exhaustive studies of volume of traffic.

He warned vehicles violating speed limits will be impounded for one month and 12 black points will be marked besides fines.

He added repeat violators will be referred to prosecutors to take legal action against them.

Al Harthi stressed the continuation of efforts to reduce road accidents most of which occurred due to driving at speeds over those limits set for internal and external roads.

He added the number of radars on roads would be increased and a surveillance system would be developed to penalize motorists jumping the red signal.

He noted that, according to a study, 1495 accidents happened over the past five years, 14 per cent of which were serious caused by exceeding set speed limits for various roads.

He said the mortality rate was about 21 per cent in serious road accidents.
