5.4 earthquake 246km north-west of Dubai

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richster scale struck  southern Iran on Thursday morning, 246km northwest of Dubai.

The two tremors took place at 5am and 7.50am.

A Dubai official said the country now has facilities for measuring local earthquakes more than 3 on the Richter scale within two minutes after the aftershocks.

Geoloogical experts in UAE can now determine the impact of or damage caused by earthquakes with the help of seismic intensity maps, the official said.

Geological and marine management departments have been linked with data and maps to monitor any seismic intensity. Crisis and disaster management cells at Dubai Police will directly benefit for within minutes it can trace the location that may be affected by any jolt. The official said that the system can gauge any loss – whether human or material – due to seismic activity with the help of maps and data of population distribution and quality of facilities of the aftershock zone.
