Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced an Emirati man to five years in jail after he was convicted of assaulting and injuring three anti-narcotics police personnel while he was being tested for drugs.

YA, 22, assaulted a second lieutenant, a corporal and a sergeant, reported 'Gulf News'.

Prosecutors had charged YA, and his 25-year-old compatriot, KM, [who later died in prison] of beating the three anti-narcotics police officers while the suspects were being tested for drugs in Dubai Police's Anti-Narcotics Department.

The case against KM has been dropped following his death. YA will be referred to the Dubai Misdemeanour Court where he will be prosecuted for theft," said Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout.

YA is also charged with stealing a pick-up truck from an employee and using it to run away. The employee testified that he was behind the Ministry of Labour office when he spotted YA whose hand was bleeding.

"When I tried to ask him what had happened to him, he thrust a razor blade [which he hid under his tongue] in my face and asked me to move away. He tried to hit me but I ran away… then he stole my truck and drove off. We reported the matter to the police who found the vehicle the next day," the employee claimed to prosecutors.

Meanwhile, the Emirati corporal who was assaulted said handcuffs of YA and KM attacked them with a razor and a knife. YA hid the razor under his tongue while KM hid the knife inside his prison dress. The policemen scuffled with the defendants when they tried to prevent them from running away, he added.
