Saudi coast guard units rescued six Indian sailors whose wooden boat caught fire and sank in the Gulf while it was heading for Iraqi with a cargo of goods.
Coast guard patrols received a SOS message from the boat off the eastern coast of the Gulf Kingdom and rushed to the area, where the boat was burning and sinking on Tuesday evening, Sharq Arabic language daily said.
The patrols used a helicopter owned by the state oil operator Saudi Aramco in picking the sailors and transferring them to a nearby medical centre.
“They all are in good condition after receiving first aid while the boat sank…we are coordinating with the UAE authorities to hand over the sailors,” coast guard spokesman Colonel Khaled Al Arqoubi told the paper.
