622kg ivory worth Dh5m seized in Dubai

Police seized 622kg of ivory worth Dh5 million from transit travellers at Dubai Airport last month.

Police said the ivory was confiscated in five incidents from passengers travelling from African countris to  America and Asia.

Brigadier Abdullah Hussain Khan, director of airport security, said Dubai Police is playing its role in trying to preserve wildlife.

Captain Khaled Mohammed Noor, director of Airport Police, said: “We are conducting special courses for our staff to combat ivory smuggling.

The ivory trade causes the death thousands of elephants annually. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, about 50,000 elephants are killed every year because of the growing demand for ivory.
