Drivers in Abu Dhabi committed a whopping 210,000 offences on the emirate’s roads in May, an average 7,000 violations a day, according to police data.

Nearly 84 per cent of the offences involved exceeding the speed limit and most of the speeding vehicles were caught by police cameras deployed on almost all roads in Abu Dhabi, which has one of the world’s worst traffic records.

The report, published in the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily Al Khaleej, showed 1,469 vehicles were seized by the traffic police because of high speed, which exceeded 200 kph on both internal and external roads.

The report showed police installed 185 new advanced speed cameras in the emirate in the first quarter of 2014 and more of them would be deployed this year.
