Dubai’s traffic police took time out of the usual issuing of tickets for offending drivers and honoured 700 motorists who did not commit a single road offence through 2012 as part of a unique white point system believe to be the first the world.

The 700 drivers were honoured at a reception held by the traffic police department on Tuesday at the instructions of the emirate’s police commander Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, according to traffic police acting chief Colonel Saif Al Mazroui.

“This is the first system of its kind in the region, if not the world,” Mazroui said. “It is designed give incentives to drivers to respect traffic rules in order to ensure safety for the society since traffic is a pillar of police work.”

He said the white point system stipulates that drivers should have licence issued in Dubai, have at least one vehicle and pile up 24 white points in one year.

He said the system also stipulates that drivers do not get any ticket from the traffic police, Salik or other authorities in all emirates.

Mazroui said the traffic police would hold a draw for a luxury car to be won by one of the 700 drivers who got white points in 2012.
