81 cars seized with no plates in Dubai

Dubai Police patrols have seized 81 cars caught without plates, which were removed by their owners to prepare for illegal races in the emirate.

Some of the cars were seized after a police chase although their drivers tried to escape at 300 kph, said Major-General Khamis Al Mazinah, Commander-in-chief, Dubai Police,

“They have been seized in various parts of the emirate mainly on Owair and Ras Al Khor Roads over the past period,” he told 'Emarat Al Youm' daily.

“They were using or preparing to use their cars for illegal races. Other cars were caught in dangerous performances and reckless driving that endangered road users.”

He said police patrols managed to catch some of those drivers with the help of the public, who reported their acts in their areas.

Mazinah said cars involved in unauthorised races or reckless driving are impounded and their owners are heavily fined. He said impounded cars can be released if their owners pay Dh100,000.
