A total of 970,000 students, boys and girls, will enroll in classes at 400 public, private schools and kindergartens across the country to commence the school year 2014- 2015.

The Ministry of Education said that the Educational Zones and schools were prepared to host the students, following the maintenance work and installation of the air conditioner devices.

It added that the mandatory school books have been distributed to the schools, and the Ministry provided over 3, 374 air conditioner devices of split type to the schools.

Parents urged to cooperate with police

The Ministry of Interior, represented by the Traffic Coordination Directorate General, launched a back to school traffic awareness campaign in coincidence with the beginning of the new academic year.

Launched under the theme 'Their Safety Concerns Us’', the awareness programme is one among many initiatives rolled out by the traffic sector that aims to unite all segments of society to educate school students about traffic accidents.

It urges them to abide by traffic rules and safeguard themselves against the dangers of the road.

Colonel Nasser Ahmed Al Hosani, acting Director General of Traffic Coordination at the Ministry of Interior, urged parents and other road users to  cooperate with the traffic police and respect road rules and follow road directional signs for the safety of the children at the start of the academic year so as to reduce road accidents and avoid traffic congestion and their ensuing negative consequences.

"School students are a major component of human development that must be maintained. Despite taking all preventive measures to protect them from all dangers and hazards, there is a need for more awareness and guidance for parents and people in charge of children to protect them,"  Colonel Al Hosani noted.

He added that the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior conducts this campaign in cooperation with the traffic and licensing departments at the state level, as well as with the Ministry of Education, Emirates Transport, the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, and others entities concerned with traffic safety in the public and private sectors.

Colonel Al Hosani also stressed the need for further awareness and guidance to promote traffic safety among all students and school bus drivers.

140 patrols

More than 140 traffic patrols will be deployed by the traffic police around schools in the emirate of Abu Dhabi to ease heavy traffic flow and ensure safety for students and other road users at the start of the new academic year.

The annual back to school traffic safety plan is implemented with the strategic partnership with Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec).

Colonel Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, Deputy Director of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, emphasised that everything was in place for the start of the new academic year 2014-2015 as part of traffic safety awareness campaigned launched today by the Ministry of Interior.

He urged motorists, parents, and bus drivers to abide by traffic regulations, and instructions, especially speed limit near schools and also advised them to park properly to ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

For bus drivers, Colonel Ishaq urged them to observe road rules and speed limit, ensure safety of students when they pick up and drop them, not to use mobile phones while driving and wear safety belt.
