Abu Dhabi bans minibus for school students

Abu Dhabi school transport committee has announced its decision to ban minibus or microbus from its fleet for the student community.

This was broadcasted in a public service announcement in a local newspaper.

The Department of Transport (DoT) stated that “as of the current school year, no minibus or microbus shall be registered as a school transport vehicle”.

The decision stems from the committee’s observation that the minibus or microbus “lack safety and security standards and violate school transport requirements and regulations”.

They have asked schools to “refrain from using the aforementioned buses as a means of school transport for the students’ own safety and to avoid accountability”.

In July this year, Dubai also passed a similar resolution.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has given Dubai schools 18 months from the beginning of this academic year to phase out the minibus.

The resolution is an update of the previous regulations, with the aim to enhance supervision and ensure safety and discipline amongst all school transportation providers, said Essa Al Hashmi, Director of the Planning and Business Development at the RTA.
