A new law, effective today [June 16, 2013], in Abu Dhabi aims to crack down upon erring motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists will face fines of Dh200, three balck points and a week-long impounding of vehicles if caught overtaking wrongly, according to a top police official.

Brigadier Hassan Ahmad Al Harthi, Director, Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said, in so far this year there have been 32 motocycle accidents recorded, with three of them critically injured and 26 others moderately hurt.

Police issued 936 tickets to riders since the beginning of 2013, he added.

Local media reported that the new law will be applied on erring riders in Abu Dhabi including Al Ain and the Western region. Offences will also include overtaking vehicles at signals, the officer added.

Brigadier Al Harthi urged riders to sport helmets and fire-proof clothes. Abu Dhabi police has launched a campaign titled ‘A Summer without accidents’.

He also called upon parents to teach children how to ride safe and the dangers of riding in sandy and residential areas.
