Abu Dhabi is planning to install speed control devices in its famous silver taxi cabs serving on motorway between the Capital and other UAE cities, the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej reported on Monday.
Thousands of the new silver taxis have already been fitted with such devices, which transmit alerts to the driver not to exceed the speed limit of 80 km per hour (kmph) inside the city and 120 kmph on motorways.
“The Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars (CRTHC) is now planning to fix these devices on taxies which accommodate eight passengers and serve motorways outside the Capital,” Al Khaleej said.
Drivers of silver taxies, which were introduced into the Capital in 2008, are warned three times in case they exceed the speed limit before they are subject to investigation by the Centre, according to the paper.
The silver taxis which are gradually replacing the Capital’s famous white and yellow cabs are operated by CRTHC under the surveillance of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport.
The company is planning to deploy at least 8,000 of those taxies by the end of 2012 to completely replace the old cabs.
