Abu Dhabi cracks down on bachelor housing

Abu Dhabi City Municipality is continuing its campaign to curb bachelors’ makeshift houses and illegal attachments made to residential villas, apartments and residences as well as commercial buildings in Abu Dhabi city without necessary permits. The campaign seeks to remove these violations and take appropriate action against offenders.

The campaign was launched by the municipality in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police in mid-September at Baniyas, Wathba, Shamkha and Shawamekh, covering about 4,000 residential quarters, and has issued 645 warnings to offending homeowners and residents.

The campaign focused on inspection works, internal partitions, unlicensed temporary walls inside homes, and followed up on outlawed annexes to villas, as well as raising awareness of the health and environmental risks of bachelors overcrowding the city's residential districts.

The campaign began with the issuing of initial written warnings to offenders who were given a grace period to remove the offence or offending structures. If they fail to redress the situation, the offence is  referred to the Municipal Prosecution Department, which in turn will refer it to the Municipal Court to take a decision as per the laws in force.

Owaida Al Qubaisi, acting executive director of Municipal Services Sector, Abu Dhabi City Municipality, said, "The objective of staging these campaigns is to enhance compliance with the provisions of Law No. 01 for 2011 regulating the occupancy of residential units in Abu Dhabi Emirate."

DM is continuing the campaign and enforcing judicial rulings issued in respect of villas and buildings which are in breach of the building code throughout Abu Dhabi, and is taking appropriate measures, including the demolition and removal of unlicensed walls and annexes.
