A man from another Gulf country was arrested and taken to court in Abu Dhabi after he was found to have taken drugs when he had a test for a government job.

The unnamed man had already worked in a government department and wanted to move to another job in the public sector when he was asked to have a medical test in line with UAE laws requiring expatriates to undergo examination when switching jobs.

The Arabic language daily Al Khaleej said the man stood trial on Thursday and that the defence lawyer told the judge his client did not commit a criminal offence on purpose since he knew he would have a test.

The lawyer also said tests showed the level of drugs in the defendant’s blood was below the minimum 50 per cent which is punishable according to the UAE law.

The court decided to adjourn hearings for sentence to Feb 5, the paper said.
