The Abu Dhabi Police will observe International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking tomorrow, which falls on 26th June every year.

This year, the theme selected by the United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime is "Listen First."

Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithi, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police, stated that International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is being observed, in line with the desire of the wise leadership to ensure a safer and more stable community, as well as to redouble efforts to protect the youth from drug addiction.

He emphasised that efforts are being made by the Abu Dhabi Police to adopt the best initiatives and plans to deal with drug abuse, in co-operation with local, regional and international organisations, and provide capable, qualified and efficient human resources to curb drug addiction.

"The Abu Dhabi Police has adopted several methods to fight drug abuse and to curb its influence," he noted.

Major General Al Rumaithi emphasised the importance of creating awareness about the dangers of various drugs.

"Fighting drugs is the responsibility of the police, security, health and cultural authorities. It is society’s responsibility to protect the youth and the community from these poisons through an integrated national project," he added.

He also mentioned the important role played by the family in building the community, so as to prevent children from falling prey to addiction. "The parents must follow community child-rearing methods, based on our noble values and traditions that can protect the youth from these dangers," he added.

Major General Al Rumaithi noted that the Abu Dhabi Police is working to ensure the nation remained free of drugs through cultural programmes, which were in line with the national strategy to fight drugs.

Major General Maktoum Ali Al Sharifi, the Director-General of Abu Dhabi Police, remarked that fortifying the community from drug abuse was one of the priorities of the police.

He observed that the success of the plans and programmes to fight drug abuse depended upon the co-operation of the public, and their awareness about the dangers of drug abuse among the youth.

"We realise what this disease can do to the individual and the community, it being a cause of concern among communities around the world," he added, stressing that the focus should be on strengthening youth protection programmes and directing their energies towards the advancement and development of the community."
