Abu Dhabi police freezes 40 driving licences

Abu Dhabi traffic police have frozen 40 driving licences for one year after their holders accumulated a record 72 black points because of persistent traffic offences, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The 40 drivers will now have to undergo a compulsory training course at an authorized driving institute in the emirate before they are allowed to drive again, the paper said, quoting police sources.

Under the new black point system, introduced more than two years ago, drivers accumulating 24 black points will have their licences taken off them for three months while those with 48 points will have their licences frozen for six months.

“Since this system was introduced, 40 driving licences have been frozen for one year after their holders amassed 72 points, the maximum limit in police records…those with 72 points will have to undergo a training course so they will have a chance to change their behavior, develop their driving skills and comply with traffic rules,” it said.
