Abu Dhabi’s population stood at around 2.4 million at the end of 2011, including 433,785 Emiratis, accounting for about 18 per cent, according to official data.

Expatriates were estimated at 1.988 million and the bulk of them are from other Arab countries and south Asia, showed the figures included in the 2011 statistics book issued this week by the Abu Dhabi Health Authority.

A gender breakdown showed Emiratis include 217,825 males and 215,950 females while expatriates include 1.522 million males and 466,304 females.

The report, published in the Arabic language daily Albayan, showed around 32,000 babies were born in 2011 while deaths stood at 2,902.

Abu Dhabi is the largest oil and gas producer in the UAE, accounting for more than 90 per cent of its total hydrocarbon output. Its oil reserves of around 92 billion barrels also exceed 93 per cent of the UAE’s total proven crude deposits of 98 billion barrels.

At that population level, Abu Dhabi accounts for nearly 30 per cent of the UAE’s total population of around 8.2 million.

South Asians, mainly those from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are believed to form nearly half Abu Dhabi’s population.

Abu Dhabi to stage 'best garden' contest

If you live in Abu Dhabi emirate and believe you have a beautiful garden at your house, then it is your chance to win Dh100,000. If you are not lucky enough, you could still win Dh50,000 or Dh30,000.

The unique contest will be staged by the Abu Dhabi Municipality in a bid to encourage greening by the public and protect the environment.

Dubbed “my garden is my city,” the contest will be launched late this year and it will cover residents in all parts of the emirate.

Prizes worth Dh200,000 have been allocated for the winners, including Dh100,000 for the top winner. The second will get Dh50,000 while the third winner will receive Dh30,000.

The Municipality said it would receive applications between December 5 and January 5 and the final results would be announced in March to mark the annual greening week in the emirate.

“Municipal officials will make field visits to the participating gardens for 45 days starting from January 15,” it said.
