Abu Dhabi supermarkets are free from contaminated peanut butter cream which has been recalled in the US and Europe, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) said in a statement on Tuesday.
“ADFCA inspectors combed all outlets in the emirate and concluded that the US-made peanut butter cream contaminated with salmonella and produced by Trader Joe's is not found in Abu Dhabi markets,” read the statement.
The report by the inspectors pointed out that the contaminated product was distributed only in the US and some European countries.
Mohamed Jalal Al Reyaysa, Director of Communication and Community Service, ADFCA, said the precautionary note issued by the Authority a few days ago was meant to address travellers to avoid the contaminated product.
Al Reyaysa stressed the food market in the emirate of Abu Dhabi is subjected to rigorous monitoring from the border points up to the outlets, besides awareness programs among the consumers. "Since the beginning of this year, ADFCA has rejected a large amount of food products because they did not comply with the rules regarding food labels and health certificates or other reasons that made the products unfit for consumption. Guaranteeing the safety of all food products in the emirate is our top priority," he explained.
As of October first week, this particular peanut butter that is being recalled has caused 35 people to become sick with salmonella in 19 states in the US, and sixty-three per cent of these cases involve children under the age of 10, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
According to Sunland’s recall announcement, the affected products were manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012.
