Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport (DoT) is seeking to install additional air-conditioned bus shelters in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the western region.

According to a public tender announcement in today’s dailies, DoT is inviting qualified firms to participate in the tender to design and build air-conditioned bus shelters across the emirate, with the project involving design and construction of civil, mechanical and electrical works for AC bus shelters.

It must be noted that Abu Dhabi successfully installed about 20 air-conditioned bus shelters in the first batch of such bus shelter in mid-2009.

The DoT had at that time announced that it planned to install a total of 550 shelters across the emirate by 2011 at a cost of Dh100 million. While about 70 to 80 shelters are already operational in the emirate, the deadline for all 550 shelters to be operational has since shifted to 2013.

The bus shelters maintain comfortable temperatures between 22°C and 24°C for commuters, and are designed to provide seating for eight people and have an electronic bus ticketing system. There is also room for one wheelchair user and about 8 standing commuters.
