Ailing Karama buildings given more time

Wasl Properties, part of the Dubai Real Estate Corporation (DREC), has decided to extend the evacuation deadline for 17 ailing buildings in Karama until mid June 2012; the deadline set by Dubai Municipality’s report in this regard.

Advising residents to evacuate in preparation for demolition, Wasl Properties decided to extend the evacuation period to give residents ample time to manage before the academic year 2011/2012 ends.

Although the majority of the residents have not responded to Wasl’s advice to relocate, the company took a firm stand so as not to compromise the safety of residents and to preserve the aesthetic view of the city. The continuous refusal to relocate has delayed comprehensive maintenance and restoration works, which lead to this situation.

Abdullah Ishaq, Head of Leasing and Customer Service Centers, Wasl said: “There is no doubt that the safety of residents is our top priority. Our ultimate decision of demolishing the ailing buildings is for the residents’ own wellbeing; a matter Wasl will never compromise.”

Stemming from its corporate social responsibility values, Wasl Properties has also announced a series of incentives and support measures to encourage residents to relocate. The residents will be given priority to rent units from the company’s portfolio of housing projects. It will also grant them an additional month as a grace period and waive the 5% commission fee on rent contracts.
