Ajman’s population put at 237,000

Ajman had 237,000 people at the end of 2009 and more than 80 per cent of them were expatriates, official data showed on Monday.
The emirate’s total population at the end of last year was around five per cent higher than at the end of 2008, when it stood at 224,000, showed the figures published in Ajman’s annual statistics book.
Nationals were estimated at 43,000 including 22,000 males at the end of 2009, showed the book, excerpts of which were published in local newspapers.
Expatriates stood at 194,000, accounting for nearly 81.8 per cent of the total population. They included around 131,000 males and 63,000 females.
By age group, those under four years were put at 20,882 while those between five-nine years stood at 20,046. The population stood at 18,935 for the 10-14 age group, 18,460 for the 15-19 years group, 29,741 for the 20-24 group, 34,972 for the 25-29 group and 30,642 for the 30-34 group.
The number was estimated at 23,478 for the 35-39 age group, 16,721 for the 40-44 group, 10,721 for the 45-49 group, 6,339 for the 50-54 group, 3,270 for the 55-59 group, 1,529 for the 60-64 group and 838 for the 65-69 group. There were 1.058 people aged above 70 years.
The report showed births in Ajman increased to 4,709 last year from 4,442 in 2008 and deaths to 476 from 383.
Ajman has historically been the fifth largest emirate in the UAE in terms of population and GDP. The largest is Abu Dhabi, followed by Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al-Khaimah. Fujeirah and Umm Al-Quwain are ranked behind Ajman.
