Ajman to review building rules for balconies

With increasing reports of fatal falls from windows and balconies in the UAE, building architecture is once again in focus.

Though all the emirates strictly follow international safety standards in residential building construction, Ajman has stated it will still reconsider architectural specifications of windows and balconies.

Ajman Municipality officials said they would work in co-ordination with civil defence authorities to ensure they prevent further mishaps.

Ahmed Abdel Raziq, Executive Director of Dubai and Sharjah Municipalities, said considering the safety of our residents it is mandatory we review the specifications of construction of balconies and windows in Ajman.

The new proposals include reducing number of windows in halls as well as having security latches at top of windows so that children do not access it easily, he said.

Yet another suggestion is to have enclosed balconies in order to prevent accidental falls, said Raziq.

Once these proposals are discussed with the civil defence officials and approved they could be implemented early next year, he added.
