The Dubai Criminal Court has adjourned the Abed Al Boom case until August 22 as it is unable to ascertain whether Al Boom has paid $20 million into the account of the Judicial Committee assigned to check and settle the accused's financial affairs.
At Al Boom’s last hearing, defence lawyer Ali Al Falasi submitted to the court a document testifying that $20 million had been deposited into the Judicial Committee’s Dubai Islamic Bank account.
The court adjourned the hearing until yesterday for the Judicial Committee to submit a document proving the amount had been deposited.
The Judicial Committee failed in yesterday’s hearing to submit the requested document so the case was adjourned once again until August 22.
Emirati Abed Ramadan Al Boom and seven others have been accused of breach of trust and issuing bad cheques in a theft involving about Dh900 million from 3700 depositors.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai formed the Judicial Committee to check the financial status of Al Boom.
Al Falasi told Emirates 24|7 that the $20 million is the first installment of $300 million that will be deposited into the Judicial Committee’s account.
He said that Al Boom and the other seven accused did not take the depositors’ money for themselves but as the accounts were frozen following the General Prosecutor’s order, their cheques had bounced.
In an earlier session, the defence lawyers asked the court for the acquittal of the eight accused giving that reason.
The others accused are two Emiratis identified as KRA, and ARS, three Somalis identified as ZHA, AH, ZY, an Egyptian, MAD, and a Malawi, MM.
Each of the seven faces charges of criminal participation in breach of trust.
