A knife-wielding masked Syrian stormed into a company in Dubai and tried to rob its offices after threatening to kill a Nepalese female receptionist before he was arrested nearly an hour later, according to police.

The man randomly picked the company in the Al Qouz area and appeared to be influenced by Western robbery movies when he tried to take the Nepalese woman hostage.

Police said the thief put the knife on the woman’s neck, forced her out with him and threatened to kill her in case company employees follow him.

He then got into a stolen car and fled, triggering a massive police chase that resulted in his arrest in Al Nahda area nearly an hour later.

Assistant Police Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Affairs, Major General Khalil Al Mansouri, said the thief had checked other companies in the area before randomly selecting one.

He said investigations showed that the thief had no knowledge about that company and used a stolen car in the failed operation.

‘Emarat Al Youm’ daily said nine policemen and officers were honoured for their swift response that led to arrest of the burglar.
