Asian molester to be re-tried for confessing without translator

The UAE’s top court ordered the retrial of a Filipino sentenced to three months in prison after he was convicted in a molestation case on the grounds he confessed in the absence of a translator, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

A Court of First Instance sentenced the unnamed defendant to six years in jail after he confessed of touching sensitive parts of a girl, but a court of appeals reduced the prison term to three months, prompting him to appeal with the Federal Supreme Court (FSC).

The FSC abolished the previous sentence and ordered a retrial of the defendant on the grounds he made a confession in Arabic language which he does not understand.

“The FSC ordered a retrial of the defendant with a new tribunal as the absence of a translator made his confession invalid,” 'Emarat Al Youm' daily said.
