Awareness on earthquakes, safety procedures inevitable: DM

Published

Mohammad Mushroom, Director of Survey Department at Dubai Municipality, said that awareness on earthquakes and safety procedures has become important after the increased rate of seismic activity in southern Iran and confusion that followed the earthquake of April 16.

'The municipality has taken all measures and procedures necessary to ensure the safety of the facilities and the people in Dubai through detailed studies to assess the seismic risk and the use of high structural standards,' Mashroom said.

He also pointed out that the earthquake monitoring network in Dubai Municipality is the first network to monitor earthquakes in the UAE, which could spot more than 73 shakes in southern Iran from places nearby Bandar Jask, East Almanab and Bandar Abbas ranging strength between 3 to 6.3 degrees on the Richter scale during the period from May 9 until the morning of May 13.

'Residents of Dubai didn't feel the quake on May 11 due to different mechanical occurrences and its depth comparing to the previous tremors as well as the occurrence of current activity in southern Iran. Such distant earthquakes will not affect the facilities in Dubai,' he further explained.

Iman Al Khatibi, Head of Geodetic Survey Section said the municipality has been conducting awareness campaigns constantly about earthquakes and safety measures for schools, colleges and government agencies and preparing brochures, booklets and signboards for distribution to government departments in the Emirate of Dubai.

She also urged the local media to raise the level of awareness and knowledge on safety procedures in coordination with the civic body to reduce the negative effects of earthquakes.
