A jobless Bangladeshi allegedly attempted, with the help of his friends, to kill a compatriot by throwing him from the roof of a four-storey building at Al Safiya area over a financial dispute, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

According to the prosecution, on February 2, MHA, 27, and his friends dragged Mohammed Shuhail Ahmad,32, by his leg to the roof of a building in Al Safiya area in a premeditated attempt to kill him.

MHA had said that he will pay back to the victim Dh20,000 which he received from him for a work visa. The accused asked the victim to give him a commitment letter against receipt of the money. When the victim refused to give him the letter, MHA beat him up and dragged him to the building roof’s edge threatening to throw him down if he did not give him the letter. The victim resisted and refused so MHA threw him down from the roof into the street.

The victim was rushed to Rashid Hospital where his life was saved after surgery. The prosecution accused MHA of attempting to kill and stealing Dh20,000 from Mohammed Shuhail Ahmad  which he had given him for a work visa.

Mohammed Shuhail Ahmad testified that on Janurary 30, he came from Al Ain to Dubai to ask MHA to return his Dh20,000. “He asked me to come to Sheraton Deira at Al Muteena area. When I arrived there I did not see him, so I called him again. He asked me to come to Hor Al Anz area near Talal Supermarket, so I went. As I arrived there, I saw the accused accompanied by two other people. They asked me to hand over the commitment letter. I refused to do so unless he paid me the money first. We left the place as we could not reach a compromise.

“On February 2, at around 6.30pm, I got a call from MHA asking me to come to the same place at Hor Al Anz. As I arrived there I saw him with the same two men who were with him the first time. He again asked me to give him the letter but I refused, telling him “Not before he pays me the money.” He asked me to accompany him to his accommodation in a nearby building to give me the money. I accompanied the three to the building’s roof where we sat. I felt that MHA was not willing to give me the money. So I wanted to leave, but one of the men called Amanullah Bito blocked the door, preventing me from leaving the roof. MHA then beat me up and dragged me to the roof’s edge and threatened to throw me off the roof if I do not give him the letter. When I refused, he threw me from the roof. A pedestrian heard me screaming and called the police,” testified the victim.

Islam Saeed, 25, Egyptian, testified that on February 2, at around 9.30pm, while he was standing with his friends at Al Safiya area, he saw some people gather around a person who was lying on the street unable to talk clearly because of his injuries. “I did not understand what he was talking but I knew that he had fallen from the building. So I called the police,” he said.

The victim’s condition was critical when he was brought to the hospital and he needed prompt surgery for fractions in his spine and pelvic bones, according to the medical report.

The court will reconvene on December 27.
