The UAE Ministry of Health has urged the public to beware of websites promoting unsafe medical products.

Buyers have been advised to check whether these health products are registered with the ministry.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has asked the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) to block a website which sells contact lenses to UAE and GCC consumers through the Internet in violation of Federal Law No. 4 of 1983 concerning the pharmacist’s profession and the Cabinet's decision No. 7 of 2007 about health advertisements.

Dr Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Practices and Licensing at the Ministry of Health, said: "There is a significant risk in the promotion and sale of medical products and devices without advice from a specialist doctor or registration of these products in the Ministry of Health".

He also said the ministry monitors some websites that harm the UAE's efforts to control the sale of medical products. These websites do not mention the name of the company, state its activities or reveal its legal status in the UAE. The health products are usually promoted through Blackberry advertising text messages.

Al Amiri also said the Ministry of Health has asked Emirates Post to stop the delivery of health products not registered by the ministry.
