Boys spray helium gas through Dubai Mall ventilation “as a joke”

Dubai Mall was evacuated on Sunday after two Emirati teenaged boys sprayed helium gas through the building’s ventilation openings “as a joke.”

Police who were called into the Mall arrested the two boys after the incident, which did not cause any casualties, Emirat Alyoum newspaper said.

It quoted police as saying the two confessed to spraying the gas, but said they were joking and did not expect the gas to spread so quickly.

“The gas caused panic and the Mall had to be evacuated,” said Brigadier Khalil Al Mansoori, director the criminal investigation department in Dubai.

“Police will summon their parents who will present a statement such an incident will not be repeated or their sons will be prosecuted next time.”

A European woman who was sentenced to life in jail and ordered deported by a Dubai court 15 years ago is pleading to be released for good conduct.

The woman was convicted by a criminal court in the emirate of murdering her friend, who she said was working as a prostitute.

“The defendant has submitted a plea to court to set her free for good conduct…the court is considering her request,” the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily Al Khaleej said.
